What is diastasis recti, exactly?
Diastasis recti means the two halves of your abdominal muscles have separated along the midline — the connective tissue stretched, usually during pregnancy. The result: a belly that still looks pregnant months or years later, a core that feels disconnected, sometimes back pain. If you can gently press your fingers above your navel while lying down and feel a gap wider than two fingers, that is worth checking with a professional. Around two thirds of women have some separation in the third trimester, and for many it never fully closes on its own. The good news: the right movement program closes most gaps.
Next step: explore postpartum Pilates classes built for exactly this.

Which exercises are safe with diastasis recti?
Safe work rebuilds the deep core without pushing pressure forward on the midline:
- Deep breathing with core connection — exhale, gently draw the belly toward the spine, then add movement
- Pelvic tilts — small, slow, controlled
- Heel slides and toe taps — legs move, ribs stay down
- Bird-dog and modified side planks — once the basics feel connected
- Pelvic-floor-aware Pilates — exactly what we coach live at LOVJOY, with corrections in real time so you do not push into the gap
What makes a diastasis worse?
Anything that spikes pressure against a weak midline: crunches, sit-ups, full planks held poorly, heavy lifting with breath held, jumping. Not forever — but until the deep core can manage pressure, these work against you.

How long until it improves?
With consistent work 3–4 times a week, most women feel a real difference in 6–8 weeks — the timeline we build our postpartum program around. It is not overnight miracles. It is a marathon, and you do not have to run it alone.
When to see a professional first
If you have pain, a visible bulge that domes during effort, prolapse symptoms (heaviness, pressure), or leaking that limits your day, see a physio or your doctor before starting — then bring their guidance to class. Pilates complements that care; it does not replace it.
