Pilates or the gym: the honest answer
I get this question every week, so let me answer it honestly. A gym gives you machines, weights and cardio rows. Pilates gives you one thing done deeply: your core, your posture and the way your body actually moves. Neither is "better" in the abstract. But for the women I teach, mostly in their 30s to 50s, rebuilding after pregnancies, C-sections or years of desk work, Pilates wins for one reason. Precision.
At the gym you can lift with poor form for years and feel it in your back, your neck, your pelvic floor. In Pilates, the entire method is about doing the right movement, the right way, with someone actually watching.
What the gym does well
- Raw strength and muscle mass: heavy progressive loading is unbeatable if your form is already solid.
- Equipment variety and open hours.
- Cardio options under one roof.
Where Pilates simply does more
- Your deep core: not the six-pack, the corset of muscles underneath it, plus your pelvic floor. No gym routine trains this systematically.
- Posture: Pilates retrains the muscles desk work switches off, so standing tall stops being effort.
- Rebuilding after babies: diastasis, C-section recovery, leaks when you sneeze, this is Pilates home turf. A gym program that ignores it can quietly make things worse.
- Joint-friendly progression: small controlled movements first, load later. Your joints get stronger without getting hammered.
- Mind-body connection: 30 minutes of precise movement quiets the noise in your head like a good meditation session.
Is this for you?
Choose the gym if you already move well, love lifting, and want maximum strength per hour. Choose Pilates if you want to fix how your body works before loading it, or if you are postpartum, dealing with leaks, back pain or a core that feels disconnected from your brain.
The honest answer for most women I meet: start with Pilates until your core connection is solid, then add gym work if you want it. That order prevents the injuries that bring people to me in the first place.
Do you have a condition that worries you?
Diastasis, prolapse symptoms, chronic back pain, these need movement adapted to you, not a generic program. Every LOVJOY class comes with options for pain, leaks and low energy, and private sessions can be adapted minute by minute. Your first group class is free, in French or English, from your living room.
